On November 16, 1989, during a two-day tornado outburst across the southern and eastern US, a 90 mph downburst wind struck East Coldenham Elementary School. 120 students were in the cafeteria when the wind struck its badly designed 25-foot wall made of concrete and bricks. The entire wall and surrounding glass crashed down, striking and burying children. The tragedy would claim the lives of 9 children with dozens more being injured.
