Ghost Signs
R.B. Wing & Son began in 1854 selling provisions for sloops, a profitable business during Albany’s days as a booming river port. They later transitioned into selling machinery and construction parts and survived until 1996, but after more than 150 years of business, R.B. Wing & Son closed their doors, leaving this distinctly marked building as a reminder of their place in Albany’s history.

The wealthy Dutch merchant couple of Frederick Philipse and Margaret Hardenbroeck had this house built around 1682 as a stopover point within their vast estate that encompassed all of Yonkers and much of lower Westchester. For succeeding generations, it would become the primary family residence until 1776 when the property was confiscated after Frederick Philipse III pledged his allegiance to the British crown. By the late 19th century, the old manor house became Yonker’s first City Hall until its acquisition by the state, who turned it into the historic house museum that it still operates as today.

Monday came and went, but I’d rather not wait another week to share the great marker submissions I’ve received lately. So here they are and thank you to all you wonderful history explorers that sent these in!

The Laurel House Once perched atop Kaaterskill Fal

The Laurel House
Once perched atop Kaaterskill Falls stood the Laurel House resort. Built in 1852 as a boarding house, by 1881, the Laurel House had expanded into a hotel with the capacity to handle up to 300 visitors. Its scenic location and easy access by railroad made it a worthy competitor to the many nearby mountain house resorts. At the Laurel House, visitors could hike around the grounds and even pay a quarter to see a surge of dammed water released over the falls. By the 1960s, the hotel was closed and acquired by the state, ready to share the same fate as its neighbor, the Catskill Mountain House. On March 1, 1967, the old hotel was intentionally burned down, allowing the grounds to be reclaimed by nature as the land was added to the state’s Catskill Park.

With the Hudson Valley having been one of the most strategically important regions of the Revolutionary War, it comes as no surprise that the many cemeteries scattered throughout her historic landscape are occupied by those many soldiers who took up the call. Here at Montgomery’s Brick Reformed Church over 50 veterans of the Revolution are interred. Presented here are all those graves that I could find, organized by their militias.

Goddard Mansion This out-of-state exploration was

Goddard Mansion
This out-of-state exploration was built between 1853 to 1859 for Colonel John Goddard, a businessman whose wealth within the lumber business allowed him to have this grand villa built along the Cape Elizabeth shore. The U.S. Army acquired the property in 1898 and used it to house married enlisted men and their families that were stationed at the adjacent Fort Williams. By 1964, when the town purchased the property, the mansion was already in a state of decay. By the 1980s, its crumbling interior was estimated too costly to restore so the crumbling interior was burned and removed. Today, Goddard Mansion stands as a fascinating stop within Fort Williams Park’s scenic trails.
